Losing on time when opponent has insufficient mating material

@jenia2017 2 d3 is a good move, was played in World Championship matches Tal- Botvinnik and also Fischer has played it several times.
The new rule is a travesty because you have to LOSE your own material to make a draw when you timeout. This is not chess

It also makes the game less interesting because there are fewer opportunities to save a draw. The way it is now, you might as well resign if you go down a piece. There's nothing to play for.

Time wins are the least interesting part of chess. Please bring the old rule back. This isnt fide. This is lichess.

Well, if you lose on time you'll lose on time. First of all you are responsible to complete a game in the alotted time. Is the game completed? No.

Everything alright. Instead of complaining switch to increment then you'll be able to complete the games. An end of a chess game would enhance the quality as well- so go for mate! :)

Timing out to avoid a mate and get a draw, that was a travesty and that was not chess.
Also with a pawn against 2 knights you are better of if you can lose the pawn to draw.
In the ongoing tournament in Norway we even saw a nice stalemate in round 4 game So - Karjakin by losing a rook, that is chess.
Play with increment if you do not like FIDE rules.
#15 (and others) Despite repeated mentions of "FIDE", the rule being enforced is simply that if a mate can be constructed by a sequence of legal moves, then the opponent's time out constitutes a loss. The complete FIDE ruleset is quite complicated.

Also, considering that K+X can often mate (X being any piece), your statement about "a player down a piece should just resign" is the opposite conclusion from what I would draw, but whatever.

Nothing forces you to play without an increment; even a 1-second increment would both make it more difficult to lose on time, and persuade opponents to not play for a time win. But then it's more challenging to win games on time too.
You are all Barbarians with no appreciation of what makes chess a great game.

First "there's nothing to play for", second "you're all barbarians"?

The previous rule was inconsistent and even players with forced checkmate weren't awarded points!

I suggest players interested in learning play using an increment.
