stratego needs an application like this

Guys, you have the best application one could possibly imagine. The stratego community also needs such an application. Go to stratego.com and test their app. It's too slow and without remain visible ( imagine you would have to memorize all the chess pieces, like in memory). Maybe some programmers here build a stratego app with remain visible. We don't need an AI. So it's not so much to programm, as most of the framework could be used for stratego. But whoever programs it should play about one hundred stratego games before. Than he knows, what has to be done.
By the way, I can provide images for the stratego figures. They are from a scan from an old board game and they are free to use( not protected by copyright).
I like their board game (in real life). I suppose I could try this one out too. :P

A lot of games need one like this. Not that Stratego is that original mind you. Stratego just develops a bit on the ideas of the Chinese game Luzhanqi, which predates it by centuries (you can find how to play it here http://ancientchess.com/page/play-luzhanqi.htm ). In fact, Stratego is probably the simpler game of the two.

Stratego is good fun, of course, but I don't think it's as interesting as some other abstract board games. GemBlo (an advanced but still simple Blokus) comes to mind, but sadly that's very recent and strictly protected by copyright.

Personally, I'd really like to see a lishogi.

Shogi is probably the only game in the chess family I prefer to standard chess. You don't feel the game is totally lost (or easily won) after a few moves like you do in chess, as both players can bring captured pieces back onto the board at any time (this is the 'drop rule'). The drop rule alone makes it superior (IMO), though promotions are also much more interesting.

A downside is that most of Shogi's extensive literature is published in Japanese. Also, typically carries on for 30 minutes as opposed to chess's 10 minutes for a reasonably satisfying game, so you need to set a bit of time aside.
Guess I'll share what I have for the other oddballs playing obscure games, in case some of you missed the sites, though most are pretty obvious:

- PlayOK : http://www.playok.com/ or how to keep it simple. Just looked and surprised to see more players than lichess just for chess! Got the classic ones : chess, shogi, xiangqi, checkers, backgammon, go, gomoku, reversi.

- Boardspace : http://www.boardspace.net/french/index.shtml Some nice abstract games (GIPF games especially).

- IgGameCenter : http://www.iggamecenter.com/info/fr/main.html Lots of games and variants, not so many players...

- Goldtoken : http://goldtoken.com/ Turn-Based. Lots of games (and chess variants).

Please share your links too!
@Hellball very good input. You know about stratego history.
In the comment section of this youtube video is a list of games, that have a stratego like game mechanic.

Lot's of Chinese names in that list. The game you pointed me to, Luzhanqi, comes very close. Amazing that it so old.
