Arena Question

Hi guys,

I tend to avoid the open arenas as I am only around 1100 rated and I don't want to be schooled by a CM or anything, should I not worry because the algorithm will try and pair me against people of nearer my rating or should I not fear playing good players?

Thanks,
Papa.

Arena's pair you on points, not rating. So you could indeed get paired with anyone.

That being said, there are some u1300 arena's. So if you don't won't to play in the open arenas, then play in the rating restricted arenas

Never avoid strong ones. The only way I got from 1800+ to 1900 was by playing against stronger ones. And it is a cool to thing to brag, to have beaten a 2400 FM.(not bragging btw)
Thanks all. 1 of the reasons I queried it is I noticed the <1300 arenas don't seem to be as often as the open ones, but I will try and get onto the open ones as I'm sure you're all correct about improvement :)

Just looked up the FAQ's for arena tourney's and apparently it is still based on rating, this is taken from lichess.org/tournament/help?system=arena

How does the pairing work?

At the beginning of the tournament, players are paired based on their rating.
As soon as you finish a game, return to the tournament lobby: you will then be paired with a player close to your ranking. This ensures minimum wait time, however you may not face all other players in the tournament.
Play fast and return to the lobby to play more games and win more points.
